Dr. Edie Johnson
Edie Johnson is the Music Director/Organist here at Westminster. She is also a lecturer in the College of Music at University of Tennessee, Knoxville where she teaches private organ, harpsichord, and courses in organ literature and sacred music. She enjoys playing in solo and chamber music recitals as well as teaching private organ lessons to youth and adults. Edie completed the B. Mus. in organ, Magna cum laude, at Furman University, as a student of Charles Tompkins. She then earned both the Master and Doctor of Music degrees at Indiana University, studying with Larry Smith. She has performed for national conventions of the American Guild of Organists (AGO), the Association of Anglican Musicians, and the Organ Historical Society. Several of her performances have been broadcast on American Public Media’s Pipedreams.
A particular interest is the use of mental imagery and rehearsal in music learning, teaching, and performing. Edie has given many presentations to universities, AGO chapters and conventions on techniques to optimize practice sessions and relieve performance anxiety.
Edie is married to Jason Overall, Director of Music/Organist at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral. They have two children, James (18) and Elizabeth (11), along with two sweet kitties, Albie and Maisie.
“I am thrilled to be a part of the friendly, close-knit community at Westminster. The congregation is warm, welcoming, and supportive. I value the rich intergenerational opportunities that this congregation fosters as well as their support of excellent music in worship services and concerts for the community.”
